GREEK STUDENTS’ PETITION FOR THE RETURN
OF THE
SCULPTURES OF THE PARTHENON
Our culture is our point of reference, it is our very identity, the identity that answers our questions – ‘who we are’ and ‘what we are’ – it is our cultivation, our progress, our potential. It is the heart that unites all the links, those of our tradition and our history. It is the conviction that we are not precarious, it is the conviction of continuity, of our own uniqueness as a nation.
We have learned to honor the beginning of every revolution, every movement, every principle that envisions and realizes. Every year we celebrate the historic day of the beginning of the Greek Revolution of 1821, the glorious ‘NO’ of our homeland during the Second World War, on November 17 when we said ‘no’ to fascism.
Makrygiannis, a leading fighter of the Greek Revolution of 1821, states in his "Memoirs":
"I had two exquisite statues, a woman and a prince, intact - the veins were visible, so perfect were they. When they destroyed Poros, some soldiers would take them, and in Argos they would sell them to some Europeans; they were asking for a thousand silver pennies…I took the soldiers aside, and spoke to them: Even if they hand you these silver pennies, and however many more they give you, do not stoop so low as to let these statues leave our homeland. That's what we fought for. "
These words were an occasion for all of us, the students of this country called Greece, for all of us who are the proud sons and daughters of this blessed land, for all of us whose identity has been established by our cultural heritage, to take this step. To make a new beginning that looks to the future, claiming once again what we take for granted: the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to our homeland.
The sculptures of the Parthenon together with their history, currently housed in the British Museum, are a collection of sculptures which belong in the Acropolis of Athens, our Acropolis, our Athens, our place of origin and creation.
We, the Greek students, call on the Government of the United Kingdom to reconsider the issue of the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to our country.
The sculptures of the Parthenon were born to a Greek womb. They were sculpted by a Greek hand. They emerged from a Greek soul.
A Greek womb gave birth to us.
A Greek hand sculpted us.
We have a Greek soul and this soul is seeking the dream, the dream of the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to our homeland, to our Greece.
For these reasons we call upon…
the students of all the schools of our country and the schools of the Hellenic Diaspora to embrace this difficult, but feasible, effort of our school, so that we can all contribute to the restoration of the Parthenon monument through the return of its detached parts to their native land.
Because unity is strength, especially when it comes to a sacred and just struggle.
Let us all get together for a flying start
